Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment
Acrovyn by Design® from CS, was the perfect solution for the redevelopment of the Royal Hobart Hospital’s new children’s unit. Led by our design partners Lyons in collaboration with Terroir, Acrovyn by Design® was preferred for the 47 bed heads in the hospital’s new paediatric ward to continue the theme of ‘a Trip to the Antarctic’. The artwork featuring whales, penguins and icecaps were cleverly embedded into Acrovyn® wall protection panels in the children’s bed heads, while providing all the functional benefits required in modern healthcare design.
Lyons has specified Acrovyn® in many of their projects as CS offers a vast selection of colours; therefore, it was a good choice for this venture. Lyons have said “the versatility of Acrovyn by Design® allows for many applications. The colours used throughout the Royal Hobart Hospital play an important role in contributing to the hospital’s wayfinding strategy through colour identity”.
The combination of functionality and the design flexibility of Acrovyn® wall panels allowed the creative theme to easily extend to the bed heads. Traditionally, hospital wards have fairly plain looking walls, but with thoughtful design, the children are now soothed with playful images around their beds. This more creative approach really helps to calm and entertain the kids during times of healing.
The Lyons team and client were very pleased with the project, with Deputy Project Director of Royal Hobart Hospital, Cheryl Carr saying, “we are incredibly proud of this very special, and very unique, fun and healing environment for our kids. We really wanted this project to make a point of difference for the kids as the first designated Children’s Hospital in Tasmania – it’s just come up a treat!”.
It’s a stunning experience for the young patients and it really shows how imagery and colour can transform a space. The Acrovyn® solution gives complete flexibility for any design theme with all the performance properties for ongoing cleaning and hygiene. Hospitals around the world recognise the critical role of art and design in alleviating stress often associated with inpatient treatment.
